Packing for your trip

What should I pack for my trip?

Before heading to a country like Cambodia, it's important to know what to pack in order to avoid any unexpected issues. If you're planning a road trip, a travel backpack will be your best option. However, if you're staying in one city, a sturdy suitcase is recommended as airport luggage handlers are not always careful with your bags.

Luggage

We recommend packing the following items:

  1. A small backpack for personal items such as your phone, wallet, and a small bottle of water.
  2. Malaria medication if you're traveling to remote areas or the jungle.
  3. Medication for intestinal issues.
  4. Sunscreen with SPF 50 (it is quite expensive locally) and after-sun lotion for sunburns.
  5. Mosquito repellent spray and anti-itch cream for insect bites.
  6. Shower gel, shampoo, and moisturizer (these products are relatively expensive or may not be suitable for fair skin).
  7. Toothbrush and toothpaste.
  8. Sunglasses.
  9. Long clothes for temple visits (appropriate attire is required).
  10. A raincoat and/or umbrella for the rainy season, which lasts from June-July to September-October.
  11. Comfortable walking shoes.
  12. Good-quality socks.
  13. Flip-flops or sandals.
  14. One or more swimsuits.
  15. A hat or cap.
  16. A camera.
  17. A deck of cards.
  18. A notebook and pen.
  19. Books and music for long journeys.
  20. Your passport, along with one or more photocopies in case of loss.
  21. Your driving license and a map if you plan to rent a vehicle.
  22. Passport-sized photos for visa purposes.
  23. US dollars (preferably small denominations like $1 and $5 bills, especially for tuk-tuks).
  24. A flashlight in case of power outages (which are common in Cambodia).
  25. A knife, lighter, and some string can be handy.
  26. A water bottle for hikes.

First Aid Kit

As for medications, there's no need to carry your entire medicine cabinet with you. Doing so would only add to your luggage, especially since most basic medications (like paracetamol, ibuprofen, etc.) are widely available in major cities.
