Tat Tai Rapids - Guide Cambodia - Seripheap

Tat Tai Rapids

The Srepok River, which originates from a tributary of the Mekong River, splits after a few kilometers to form the Srepok River itself and the Se San River, which flows to the north of Ratanakiri Province. It flows through this province from the south, near the border with Mondulkiri. As the river passes through the commune of Lumphat, about two hours by motorbike south of Banlung, it encounters several segments known as "rapids" due to the turbulence they create. Swimming is generally possible here, and these rapids are not dangerous for those who know how to swim.

The spot can make for a nice escape for a few minutes or even hours, where you can swim and sunbathe during the dry season. However, don’t expect sandy beaches or coconut trees. The few pleasant spots can be found by walking for a few minutes, which can serve as a little hike before taking a dip.

A pleasant morning

Although urban sprawl has not yet reached the village of Lumphat, or the location of the Tat Tai rapids, noticeable mainly because there are no designated picnic spots or seating areas by the river, the area still has a charm that should not be underestimated. Development is one thing, but resourcefulness is another. You will find many points of interest by exploring a bit or following a guide. The site is located on the edge of the vast Lumphat Wildlife Sanctuary, a place that can easily be visited afterward. You will also find beautiful mango trees there.

It is entirely possible to rent a motorbike or hail a tuk-tuk from Banlung, the capital of Ratanakiri Province, and head south to the commune of Lumphat in the morning. The 40 km journey can be completed in just under two hours. Don’t forget to pack your swimsuit, some picnic supplies, and walking shoes.

Once you reach the commune of Lumphat, continue on National Road 76 to the south of the town. Just before crossing the bridge over the Srepok River, turn left onto a dirt country road. Follow the river and park wherever you like to start a small hike along the bank. The rapids are about one kilometer from the bridge.

The best time to visit is between February and May, when the dry season is well established and the landscapes are often sunny, reflecting off the riverbed. During this period, you will see rocks, easily accessible, in the middle of the rapids, and you can relax on them. Feel free to picnic by the river and leave after taking a walk in the early afternoon. It’s a great activity to fill some free time during your stay in Cambodia and Ratanakiri.
