The Mondulkiri Elephant Sanctuary - Guide Cambodia - Seripheap

The Mondulkiri Elephant Sanctuary

Over the past 10 years, Mondulkiri province has been severely impacted by deforestation. More than 40% of its forests have been destroyed for commercial purposes, either for industries or for the direct sale of precious wood. If this situation continues to worsen, many ethnic groups will be forced to migrate in search of necessary resources, and endangered animal species may disappear from the country.

NGO Mobilization

However, the region remains a popular tourist destination and still offers vast, untouched natural spaces of unparalleled beauty. Several NGOs have organized numerous activities for travelers within Mondulkiri itself. These range from jungle treks and elephant walks to folkloric tours through the villages of the region's minority groups.

The main goal of these efforts is to fund elephant conservation programs and ensure the security of the land that is suffering from deforestation. Only 41 elephants remain in this area, commonly referred to as the "Elephant Sanctuary," many of which are nearing the end of their lives. The funds generated can help sustain this reserve and enable the accommodation of new elephants.

Tourism is a key sector for all organizations seeking to protect the threatened areas of Mondulkiri. The funds raised also provide vital support to ethnic minorities, such as the Phnongs, helping them face the challenges of industrial deforestation and the appropriation of resources essential to their culture, such as rubber.
